High School Audio Projects

#1 – Spec Tape: For this project you are to write and produce one sixty second commercial for a product or service. Sometimes radio stations promote their abilities to create commercials by creating a SPEC TAPE (An example commercial).

#2 – Three PSA’s: For this assignment you are to create a public service campaign for a particular topic theme, or upcoming event with deserves publicity in the form of PSA’s on 89.1 WBSD Burlington. (Note: Although humor may be used no “spoof” PSA subjects, for example, “how to survive a zombie attack” or “the dangers of pop rocks and cola.” These must be reality-based issues that could actually air on WBSD.)

#3 – News: To develop the skills in selecting, editing, and organizing news items from material for vocal presentation.

#4 – Music Monologue (Final project in Broadcasting 1): One of your final projects, you are encouraged to combine all of your knowledge of voice (projecting, pacing, vocal variety, etc.), technical ability (recording levels, sound effects, music, etc.), and effective copy writing. You are to choose an interesting, personal story for at least a 4-minute music monologue. (It can be over 4 minutes, but not under.)

#5 – Life Story (First Broadcasting 2 project): You are to write your life story and read it (record it) in sixty seconds.

#6 – Sixty Second Commercials: This project involves recording a sixty second commercial. You must write your own commercial as well as use one from another radio station. The prewritten and written commercials will each be read using a relaxed conversational style (voice only). Then you will read the commercial using a hyped or upbeat style. Finally you will add music (and use your voice of choice).

#7 – Game Show: You will either do a straight interview (solo) or an interview game show (solo or group). You will interview a staff member or adult over the age of 18 (staff member preferred) and create a random multiple choice quiz adding in audience sounds, music, and sound effects.

#8 – The End of The World: The purpose of this project is to offer experience creating a new narrative from an existing radio project that shows creative editing.

#9 – Radio Half Hour: The purpose of this project is to offer experience in the preparation and production of the typical hour of radio disc-jockey programming. What is “typical” will depend on how you structure your half-hour of programming. However, some requirements are in order.

#10 – Two Sixty Second Commercials: For this project you are to write and produce two sixty second commercials for the same product or service.

#11 – Investigative Journalism: Radio can be used for investigative journalism in an effective way. You begin with a key question and try to answer it by getting voice on the street commentary from experts and common people.

#12 – Three PSA’s: For this assignment you are to create a public service campaign for a particular topic theme, or upcoming event with deserves publicity in the form of PSA’s on 89.1 WBSD Burlington. (Note: Although humor may be used no “spoof” PSA subjects, for example, “how to survive a zombie attack” or “the dangers of pop rocks and cola.” These must be reality-based issues that could actually air on WBSD.)
